The Baby Room

4 Months – 2 Years

In the Baby Room, one of the focus areas is on the children’s speech and language. This is achieved by introducing one-word phrases and adding words to their vocabulary as their speech progresses.

Music Sessions at Bloomers Day Nursery Catford
Every week, our music teacher from Jumping Beans visits for a fun-filled hour of songs, dance, and rhymes! Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers each have their own session in their rooms, where they enjoy learning new songs and action rhymes. The children love moving to the music and watching the teacher play the ukulele, making each session engaging and exciting! We offer music lessons in all our rooms at our Catford Nursery.

Another focus is on the children’s fine motor skills. This is achieved through a range of mark-making, creative play, messy play, block-building, puzzle fixing and playing with musical instruments. Gross motor skills are developed through outdoor and physical play. The babies are supported with their crawling and walking.

The staff in the Baby Room help the children to build the foundations of building relationships with others, supporting their interests at this burgeoning stage of their education.

‘Messy’ and creative play form the centre of their learning and development. Key words are repeated at circle time and throughout the day, such as greetings in the children’s home languages. Children’s communication skills and language are developed through reading and free play.

Example activities include:

  •  Finger dot painting to explore colour
  • Using playdough with shape cutters and rolling pins for dexterity
  • Block building for fine motor development
  • Musical bottle shakers for sound making
  • Outdoor play
  • Exercises to explore movement.

The Toddler Room

2 – 3 Years

In the Toddler Room, the focus is on nurturing independence and fostering their curiosity through play. They continue with their ‘messy’ and creative play forms as transitionary activities and progress to the development of self. The children are encouraged to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ at the appropriate junctures and we support parents and carers in the process of toilet training. They learn to share and work with the preschool children as a way of benefiting from learning alongside peers of different ages, which extends their learning still further. The toddlers will also begin to use their cutlery and cups well, helping to set the tables and clearing up once they have finished to support the etiquette of home. Each day, the children’s independence is developed through tasks such as putting on their shoes and coats and dressing up with costumes from the home corner.

They have weekly music lessons. Here, they dance and explore movement.

Example activities include:

  •  Singing seasonal and cultural songs
  • Using fingers to mark make in wet sand for dexterity and recognition of shapes, letters and numbers.
  • Talking about the difference between people in circle time
  • Mark making on the chalkboard, which may develop into forming letters and numbers.
  • Outdoor play
  • Exercises to explore movement.

The Pre-School Room

3 – 5 Years

The transition into and out of the preschool room are ones we strive to make as seamless as possible while ensuring they are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for the rigours of Primary School. The emphasis is still very much learning through fun and play, with a slightly more structured element to get the children ready for ‘Big School’. Self-care and independence are highly praised, with the children being encouraged to use the bathroom as independently as possible, get dressed for outdoor play, communicate their needs and most table etiquette. They play counting games, help to put the date up, recognise letters and shapes and most hold their pencils correctly. They learn the early stages of conflict resolution and learn about sharing and compromise. Their final year culminates in a wonderful Graduation Morning, enjoyed by all.

Example activities include:

  • Singing and dancing with an external practitioner
  • Using magnetic numbers and letters on which to trace their fingers and get a feel for their shape prior to using a pencil to write them on.
  • Traffic board games to learn and remember about road safety
  • Use of the mini computer to get used to the mouse and keyboard.
